The Low-Code Spectrum — From Zapier to Custom Code

PowerApps, Retool, Bubble, Zapier, and n8n positioned on a complexity scale: when each tool fits.

"Low-code" and "no-code" have become buzzwords that mean everything and nothing. A marketing team using Zapier to connect their forms to their email platform is "no-code." A developer building internal tools with Retool is "low-code." A business analyst creating a PowerApp that replaces a spreadsheet is somewhere in between.

The reality is a spectrum, and understanding where each tool sits on that spectrum tells you when to use it, when to skip it, and when to warn your client that they're about to build something they can't maintain.

The Spectrum

Think of a horizontal line. On the left: zero code required. On the right: full custom development. Every tool sits somewhere on this line.
